A Little Christmas Catch-Up (and a Few Cosy Decorating Ideas!)

A cosy living room decorated for Christmas with a softly lit tree, garland draped across the fireplace, glowing candles, and neutral furnishings in warm, natural tones.

A Little Catch-Up

It’s been a while since my last blog post — far too long, in fact! The summer months ran away with me (as they tend to when projects pick up speed), so before I dive into all things Christmas, I owe you a little apology for the silence since July.

Thank you for still being here — I’ve missed sharing design thoughts and snippets of inspiration with you.

But what better way to return than with a festive post? The Christmas season is such a lovely opportunity to pause, take stock, and layer your home with warmth and personality — exactly the things that make spaces feel truly lived-in and loved.

Keeping Christmas Calm (and Beautiful)

If you’re anything like me, Christmas decorating can sometimes feel like a race to keep up with Pinterest-worthy perfection. But the most beautiful homes at Christmas are often the ones that feel calm, intentional, and gently festive rather than overdone.

Think:

  • Layering soft candlelight (mix pillar candles at different heights)

  • Adding eucalyptus or pine stems to your usual vases

  • Swapping out cushions or throws for something more textured — boucle, velvet, or wool

  • Introducing subtle metallics in brass or antique gold to catch the glow of fairy lights

It’s less about the quantity of decorations and more about creating moments around your home — those corners that make you smile every time you pass them.

If you’re hosting this year, a few thoughtful details can make a big difference to how your space feels for guests.

Some easy wins:

  • Linen napkins with a simple ribbon or sprig of rosemary — understated but special.

  • Flow and function — ensure there’s a natural space for drinks and easy seating for guests.

  • Lighting — keep it low and warm; table lamps and candles always win over harsh overheads.

If you’ve spent the year refining your home’s palette or layout, Christmas is a lovely time to see it come to life — spaces are meant to be lived in, and the season brings that to the forefront.

Simple Decorating Ideas

A few of my favourite festive touches that work beautifully in calm, contemporary homes:

  1. The Single Stem Vase — a few pine branches or winter berries in your hallway or bedside vases.

  2. Natural Wrapping — plain paper and soft ribbon, with tags made from leftover fabric or wallpaper.

  3. Mini Moments — style shelves, side tables, or windowsills with miniature trees or fairy lights for gentle sparkle.

A Note from Me

It’s been a full, rewarding year of design work, and I’m so looking forward to sharing more projects (and lessons learned!) in the new year.

Until then, I hope this post inspires you to take a softer, slower approach to Christmas decorating — one that’s less about perfect and more about personal.

Wishing you a calm, cosy, and joyful Christmas,

Hannah
